Liji Formation

Liji Fm

Period:
Neogene

Age Interval:
Oligocene to middle Pliocene, E3-N2, (36)

Province:
Taiwan

Type Locality and Naming

Southeast Taiwan. The type section is located at Liji Village ~8 km north by west of Taitung County, Taiwan.

Lithology and Thickness

Typical mélange, consisting predominantly of chaotically stratified, dark gray, very thick-bedded mudstone and small numbers of exotic blocks and rock fragments in the mélange. The thickness varies from place to place, being at least >1061 m. The mudstone is lacking in distinct stratification and seems chaotic; it shows a complex, compact scaly schistose structure formed by disruption and shear. Most exotic blocks are sandstone and ophiolites with small numbers of small blocks of siltstone, shale, limestone and andesite agglomerates.

Lithology Pattern:
Conglomerate

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its relation with the Neogene Dagangkou Fm is complex but should be mainly in faulted contact; it probably has an unconformable contact with the underlying Miocene–Pliocene Duluanshang Fm.

Upper contact

It is in fault contact with the overlying middle Pleistocene Beinanshan Fm.

Regional extent

The mélange is mainly distributed in the southern part of the Coast Range, extending in a zone from Zhili of Lienhua County southward to the northern side of Taitung County, ~70 km long and 2–3 km wide.
